About us

The 75-year history of Detroit's Žiburys school is colorful. Since 1949, the school has been founded, merged, separated, grown, shrunk, and endured. Trustees, directors, locations and facilities have changed; the main goal of the school has not.

The school's goal is to educate students as fluent Lithuanians — to teach them to read and write in Lithuanian, introduce them to Lithuanian literature, history and geography, and teach Lithuanian songs and folk dances. We aim to instill in children an unquenchable love for the Lithuanian language and loyalty to Lithuania.

Žiburys School is financially supported by parents, with support from Divine Providence Parish, the Lithuanian Foundation, the Kazickas Family Foundation, Lithuania's Ministry of Education and Science, and individual donors.

Classes are held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Divine Providence Lithuanian Parish.
